Most of us want to live long, healthy, enjoyable lives and one of the best ways to do that is to be smart about the foods we put into our bodies. When it comes to living a long life, here are some foods to avoid as much as possible:

Bagels

A classic favorite for the busy morning person, a bagel is another unhealthy food choice you should think twice about. Most bagels use white flour and have a surprising amount of sugar. Most also are high in preservatives and have little nutritional value aside from fiber, which can easily be attained through healthier food choices.

Processed Pastry

Wile they tend to be tasty and are so convenient an easy to eat, processed baked goods like muffins, cookies, and pastries are so not worth it when you consider what they do to your body.  They are full of unhealthy preservatives and additives and have a ton of sugar which does nothing but cause inflammation throughout the body and makes fat cells to multiply rapidly.

 

Frosting

Filled with trans fats, more sugar than anyone should ever have at once, and no nutritional value whatsoever, frosting out of the can is one food everyone should cut out of their diet for good. As good as it may taste there is no benefit from using it and there is no way to justify all the nasty stuff that is inside it. This is definitely one of the foods to avoid!

 

Soda

Every doctor, dietitian, and nutritional experts will tell you that soda should be cut from your diet if you want to be healthy, lose weight, and stay in shape. There are so many better options for drinks that are healthy and not full of sugar and other nasty stuff. If you must have a soda now and then many are now saying diet is even worse than regular soda so just have one now and then and try to stay away from it as much as possible!

Sugary Cereal

Who doesn’t love giving into the kid side now and then and enjoy a breakfast of Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops,  Lucky Charms, or Cap’n Crunch, however it will do nothing but wreak havoc with the high levels of sugar and its gluten content. You are better off going for some of the healthier low-sugar, gluten-free options like Rice Chex, Kix, Bran Flakes, and Corn Flakes.

 

Stick Margarine

It is almost always better to use a little bit of real butter or soft spread rather than using any of the stick-shaped margarine that can be found on grocery store shelves. Margarine is usually loaded with trans fat which is anything but good for you- it is also what is commonly used in pastries, crackers, snack foods, and the like. To keep cholesterol levels in check this is one of the foods to avoid as much as you can!

Bacon

One of the foods to avoid for a long healthy life is one of the most beloved- bacon. At only 45 calories a strip, it may not seem all that bad but bacon is extremely high in fat, sodium, and the preservative sodium nitrate. These can create real problems for your heart and digestive system even after just a few months of routine consumption. If you just have to have bacon use it as a crumble in salads or on a sandwich and eat only a slide at a time.

 

Soy Sauce

Soy sauce may seem fairly safe as it is low in calories and has riboflavin and vitamin B-6, which are good for cellular functions.  However, it is not very healthy at all due to the extremely high sodium content that can leave you bloated and spike high blood pressure to dangerous levels. A tablespoon of normal soy sauce has 900 mg of sodium and low sodium variety tend to have around 600mg, so it is less but enough that it should be used sparingly.

 

In order to live a long and healthy life, you need to make smart choices about the food you eat- and knowing the foods to avoid is one of the best places to start!
