dental implants elmhurstDental implants are revolutionizing the way we look at dental care and are changing the way people live, helping to improve the quality of life for many of them. Dental implants have been designed and perfected over the years and are now nearly as strong, durable, and aesthetically pleasing as natural teeth. Implants offer a permanent and secure solution for replacing one or several teeth. They function as anchors or support for traditional forms of dentistry, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. Implants are a great way to replace missing teeth. Without all your teeth, chewing and eating can destabilize your bite and cause you discomfort, plus your mouth can adversely shift, which ages your appearance.

A Swedish scientist and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark, developed this concept for oral rehabilitation more than 35 years ago. With his pioneering research, Dr. Branemark opened the door to a lifetime of renewed comfort and self-confidence for millions of individuals facing the frustration and embarrassment of tooth loss.

Patients with dental implants can smile with confidence and those individuals who have suffered with missing, broken, or unhealthy teeth can live their life free from the pain, embarrassment, and stress that bad teeth can bring with them. Here at Kopp Dental, we are glad to be able to help our patients understand why dental implants are so popular and how they can help improve overall quality of life.

Using Dental Implants for Improved Health

dental implantsMany people are surprised to learn what the basic capabilities of dental implants are,  as many people think they are designed only for full sets of dentures. The implants themselves are titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Small posts that protrude through the gums are then attached to the implant. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth. This is the basic structure of all dental implants that are used in dental practices today.

Dental implants are used to replace gaps formed by missing teeth and to replace damaged or diseased teeth for a healthier smile. They also help preserve facial structure because they prevent the loss of the jaw bone and keep neighboring teeth healthy and strong as well.

Here at Kopp Dental we have years of experience working with a wide range of dental implant needs. Whether you need one implant or several, we are ready to help you get the smile you deserve and to help you live your life to its fullest, without worrying about how you look or feel when you smile.

The Surgical Procedure

For most patients, the placement of dental implants is a straightforward and fairly predictable surgical procedure. In most cases the crown is not placed on the implant immediately so the implant can gradually bond with the jawbone making them stronger and more anchored when the crowns are placed. This makes them more durable and more like your own natural teeth. You can do normal things like talk, chew, and enjoy a normal life without worrying about damaging your teeth any further. During this time you may wear an interim partial or denture so you can still eat and drink and talk while waiting for your implants to heal.  These temporary teeth you wear during the healing phase will enable you to function normally.

The small posts, often referred to as abutments, protrude through the gums.  When the artificial teeth are placed, these posts will not be seen. The abutment is used as a base for the crown. The dental crown will be placed on top of the abutment, giving you the look of a full set of natural teeth.

The entire process will usually take around 6 months from start to finish and you will have implants that are as strong and realistic looking as your natural teeth. Because of the success of the process and the level of care taken during the procedure, the use of dental implants for improved health is continuing to grow as more and more people are discovering why dental implants are so popular.

Surgical Advances in Dental Implants

Using the new advances in dental implant technology, our dental experts are able to place single implants or several at a time depending on what your needs are. In some cases, a single stage implant is able to be utilized for single tooth replacement. A single stage implant allows the dentist and surgeon to work together to place the implant and on the same day place a temporary crown, eliminating the need to wait the 6 to 12 weeks before placing the crown on the implant. This procedure, can eliminate the patient needing to wear a removable prosthesis during the healing phase.

There are even unique situations where the dental damage is not very severe and the implants can be placed at the same time that the tooth is removed, thus limiting the process and recovery time even more. We will work with you during your consultation and preparation appointments to determine if any of these time efficient implant procedures are right for your needs and unique situation.

A single tooth implant, is when an implant is used to replace one missing tooth. A single crown is attached to the single dental implant post (abutment) to replace an individual tooth. This is commonly done where just a single tooth is missing between healthy natural teeth.

A partial prosthesis known as a fixed bridge, can replace two or more teeth in a row and may need a post for each tooth or may have a bridge between posts to cover the gap. A complete dental prosthesis can also be used to replace all of the of the upper or lower jaw, sometimes referred to as an implant supported over denture.

The number of implants that can be used in a single procedure will depend on several factors. It will depend on which type of prosthesis is recommended, quality and quantity of available bone and how many teeth need to be replaced. Whatever the needs may be, the staff at Kopp dental can take care of you and your smile!

We take pride in being leaders in the community when it comes to using dental implants for improved health and we are here to answer any questions you may have and the help you better understand why dental implants are so popular and why they are so widely used.

We use our teeth every day for things such as talking and eating.
